Product Description

A dwarf variety of the Alocasoa ‘Portora’, or Elephant’s Ear, this plant will only get to be around 2 feet tall and wide. It features long, glossy, brilliant green leaves grown on thick stalks. As with all Alocasia, they can be a bit finicky, but if you are able to provide the correct amount moisture and light it needs, they can be prolific growers.

Plant Care

BOTANICAL NAME: Alocasia 'Low Rider'

COMMON NAME: Low Rider Elephant's ear

ORIGIN: Native to tropical and subtropical regions of Asia and New Guinea.

GOOD FOR: Intermediate plant parents

HEIGHT: 2 ft tall and wide

LIGHT: Bright, filtered light. Direct sunlight will burn the leaves.

WINDOW PREFERENCE: North or east facing windows work best.

WATER: During the spring and summer months keep the soil moist, but do not keep the roots wet. Wait until the top two inches of soil is dry and then water around the base of the plant until you see water draining from the bottom of the pot. At this point you can stop.

HUMIDITY: This plant enjoys humidity. It thrives in a moist environment. Keep on a pebble tray or use a humidifier. If you’re a plant collector, you can also group it together with a few other plants for some self-made humidity. Don’t mist this plant as it encourages fungal diseases.

TEMPERATURE: Prefers to be between 65-80 degrees. Keep away from drafts and heat vents in the winter.  Can grow quickly in the summer months.

SOIL / REPOTTING: Alocasias like to be pot bound. When repotting, use a well draining organic loose soil that contains peat moss. Rhizomes form the root of the plant and must be above the soil line or the plant will not grow.

PLANT FOOD: In spring and summer, feed once a month. We recommend using Joyful Dirt Houseplant Plant Food. Stop feeding in fall and winter due to slower growth and dormancy.

PRUNING: Quickly remove yellowing leaves.

PESTS: Keep leaves dry to avoid leaf spot or bacterial diseases. Spider Mites are a likely infestation.

TOXICITY: Highly toxic if ingested

ANGRY PLANT PROBLEMS: Dark brown or black spots on the leaves, surrounded by a yellowish rim indicate fungal diseases. Avoid over watering and remove all damaged leaves. Treat with a commercial fungicide.
