Plant Care

BOTANICAL NAME: Chlorophytum amaniense ‘Mandarin’

COMMON NAME: Mandarin Plant, Fireflash

ORIGIN: Rainforests of Southern Africa

GOOD FOR: Intermediate plant parents

HEIGHT: 1 ft tall and wide

LIGHT: Bright, indirect light. Avoid spots where it gets a lot of afternoon sun, as the straplike leaves can burn.

WINDOW PREFERENCE: East and South windows work best.

WATER: Allow soil to go dry between watering. At this point, water thoroughly around the base of the plant until you see water draining from the bottom of the pot and then stop. This plant can be sensitive to too much fluoride in the water. If yellow, brown, or black edges develop, water with rain or distilled water.

HUMIDITY: This plant loves humidity.  Keep on a pebble tray or use a humidifier. If you’re a plant collector, you can also group it together with a few other plants for some self-made humidity. The 'Mandarin' likes a good misting every few days. When misting, always remember to do so in the morning so the water droplets can evaporate thoroughly.

TEMPERATURE: 55-85 degrees in preferable. Keep away from drafts and heat vents.

SOIL / REPOTTING: Needs well-draining, peat based soil. While they don’t mind being slightly root bound, once you see roots shoot out the bottom of the pot, it’s time to repot into something an inch or two larger.

PLANT FOOD: In spring and summer, feed once a month. We recommend using Joyful Dirt Houseplant Plant Food. Stop feeding in fall and winter due to slower growth and dormancy.

PRUNING: Remove dead leaves at the base as they die or brown out, otherwise little pruning needed.

PESTS: Mites, aphids, mealy bugs, scale, whiteflies are possible infestations that can occur.

ANGRY PLANT PROBLEMS: Yellow, brown or black leaf tips – too much  salt or excess of fluoride in the tap water. Try using rain or distilled water; foliage will burn if placed in too much direct sun. Leaf stems are brittle and can break easily.
