Plant Care

BOTANICAL NAME:  Schefflera arboricola

COMMON NAME: Umbrella Tree, Octopus Tree, Starleaf Tree, Dwarf Schefflera

ORIGIN: Taiwan

GOOD FOR: Intermediate plant parents

HEIGHT: 6 ft tall, 3-4 ft wide

LIGHT: Bright, indirect sunlight.  Can consider a spot within 4 feet of an east, south or west facing window.

WATER:  Plant prefers to be evenly moist. Wait until the top two inches of soil is dry and then water around the base of the plant until you see water draining from the bottom of the pot. At this point you can stop.

HUMIDITY: This plant loves humidity.  Keep on a pebble tray or use a humidifier. If you’re a plant collector, you can also group it together with a few other plants for some self-made humidity. These plants like a good misting every few days. When misting, always remember to do so in the morning.

TEMPERATURE: Prefers to be between 65-75 degrees. Nighttime temperatures should not go below 60 degrees. Keep away from drafts and heat vents.

SOIL / REPOTTING:  Use a well-draining, sandy potting soil. It should have ample drainage holes to allow for quick draining. You can slow the growth and prevent from getting too large by prolonging the period between repotting. As the pot gets rootbound or you see roots growing from the bottom of the pot, repot in a container one size larger.

PLANT FOOD: Feed every 2 weeks in the spring and summer growing season. We recommend using Joyful Dirt Houseplant Plant Food. Stop feeding in fall and winter due to slower growth and dormancy.

PRUNING: Prune areas that are overgrown, or appear leggy. This will keep your Schefflera full and bushy. When pruning make sure to cut above leave buds, so  new shoot will develop.

PESTS: Aphids, Scale, and Spider Mites are possible infestations to look out for.

TOXICITY – Toxic

ANGRY PLANT PROBLEMS: Overwatering- yellow leaves dropping off indicate too much water. Too little light- A plant that is leggy and floppy will need more efficient light. Make sure not to sit in direct sun, as this can burn the leaves.  Leaf dropping – your plant may be too cold, as leaves will drop quickly.
