Plant Care

BOTANICAL NAME: Philodendron hederaceum

ORIGIN: South America

GOOD FOR: Beginner plant parents

HEIGHT: 1-3’ tall

LIGHT: Bright, indirect light. Too much sun can cause the leaves to burn.

WINDOW PREFERENCE: East and west windows work best.

WATER: Wait until the top 50 percent of soil is dry and then water around the base of the plant until you see water draining from the bottom of the pot. At this point you can stop.

HUMIDITY: Regular household humidity is fine, but higher humidity allows the plant to grow larger leaves. Keep on a pebble tray or use a humidifier. Plant collectors can group with other plants for some self-made humidity. These plants like a good misting every few days. Remember to always mist in the morning.

TEMPERATURE: Enjoys temperatures between 70-80 degrees during the day and no lower than 55 degrees at night. Keep away from drafts and heat vents.

SOIL / REPOTTING: Well-draining, peat-based potting soil with the addition of perlite or coarse sand. These are fast growers, so repot one size up once you see roots growing out of the existing container.

PLANT FOOD: In spring and summer, feed once a month. We recommend using Joyful Dirt Houseplant Plant Food. Stop feeding in fall and winter due to slower growth and dormancy.

PRUNING: Remove dry or dead leaves and keep the size in check by cutting off excessive growth at the base of the stem.

PESTS: Aphids and mealybugs

TOXICITY: Due to calcium oxalate crystals, this plant is toxic. Keep away from children and pets!

ANGRY PLANT PROBLEMS: Yellow leaves generally indicates overwatering. Curling leaves could be caused by underwatering, low humidity, or plant being cold. If leaves lose their variegation, plant needs additional light.
